Aretha Louise Franklin was born on March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, Her father was Reverend Clarence LaVaughn Franklin (known as C.L.), a preacher in the Baptist Church. Aretha's mother was Barbara Siggers Franklin, a gospel singer and talented pianist. Aretha had an older sister, Erma, and two older brothers, Vaughn and Cecil. Later, her younger sister, Carolyn, was born.
