Concert For New York

On September 11, 2001, tragedy struck when planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, the result of a terrorist attack. Many people in the entertainment community were left wondering what they could do to help. One event that was organized was the spectacular Concert for New York at Madison Square Garden. On Saturday, October 20, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, along with A-list talents like David Bowie, the Who, the Backstreet Boys, Jay-Z, Billy Joel, James Taylor, and Paul McCartney performed. Much of the crowd was filled with people carrying signs for their lost loved ones and supporting the Fire and Police Departments of New York City.

Mick and Keith performed two songs, “Salt of the Earth,” their tribute to the common working man from Beggar's Banquet, and “Miss You,” from Some Girls. The concert, which was aired on the VH1 network, resulted in VH1's highest ratings ever and raised $30 million, which went to the Robin Hood Relief Fund to help people affected by the tragedy.
